David Beckham: “No matter what, we’re coming to Miami”

Planned for last Thursday, David Beckham’s latest plan to host his Major League Soccer expansion franchise has been delayed for another six days, with Miami’s commissioners still not ready to make a decision.

The new Miami stadium, home of the MLS football team, will have the capacity to receive 25,000 viewers, with 3,750 parking spaces, a hotel with 750 rooms, restaurants and several free-form football pitches surrounding the area. Once is up and running, the franchise will also bring a training center, and an academy focused on developing local players to the Miami.

The project to build the stadium is taking more than five years to be concluded, and although other sites have been taken into account, the last proposal would be to build the stadium at the Melreese Country Club, the public golf course that the city owns, near Miami International Airport.

Last Thursday Beckham took Jorge Mas’s microphone, his development partner, to praise more than 100 supporters. “No matter what,” Beckham expressed to the fans, “we’re coming to Miami. Simple as that.”

In the proposal, the city’s council will collect approximately $140 million in rent payments over 39 years, a mark of almost $ 3.5 million annually.

Commissioners’ approval is the first step to turn the project into reality, after which voters will weigh in on November 6th and make a decision to change the city’s agreement and allow a no-bid deal to lease the 73 acres. Petitions to keep the golf club are circulating on the Internet.
